Chapter 10

The name of the restaurant was Russian Roulette, a cozy little building tucked away in the corner of the dirt road. He had given her specific instructions on how to get there and was waiting for her at the door.

“Cute name. Does the place belong to you?” she asked when he took her arm and led her into the dimly lit room.

“It belongs to a friend of mine,” he murmured, his eyes searching her face. She looked tired and sad and that was something he was going to have to fix, whatever he had to do. He had spent a tormenting time at the apartment, trying to sort out things inside his head, fearing that any minute she would call him to say that it was over. He did not bother to tell her that he was the one who had funded the capital for his friend to open the place.

A tall, swarthy, handsome man came forward with hands outstretched, a smile on his face. “Welcome my friend.” His accent was deeper than her husband’s, his smile gracious.

“Dmitry, this is my wife, Laila. Darling, meet my friend, Dmitry Petrov.”

He bowed before her as he took her slender hands in his. “You will always be welcomed in this humble establishment. Let me show you to your table. Your meal will be ready in about ten minutes, but I have prepared a little tasty treat for you to start with.” With a flourish he pointed them to a table in the corner of the room that ensured privacy.

“Thank you,” Laila murmured as Michail pulled her chair out for her before taking his. He watched as she stared at the bowl in front of her. “It’s called Pirozhki. It’s quite tasty. Go ahead and try it,” he urged. She did and he saw her eyebrows lift as she ate.

“What do you think?”

“It’s delicious.”

He nodded and started eating his. A waiter came over to him and she half-listened as they murmured in Russian before the man left. “I have decided on the Chicken Kiev. I hope you don’t mind me ordering for you, it’s just that I know these dishes and have an idea what you would like.”

“It’s fine.”

Michail fell back into silence and waited until they were halfway through the meal before he spoke again. “You look tired but I wanted us to have a chance to eat before going back home.”

She looked up at him and nodded, still not saying anything. He bit off a sigh and resumed eating. She looked up startled a moment later when he reached across the table and pulled the neck of her sweater down, reaching for the necklace where the rings were suspended, his intense dark eyes studying them. “Take it off,” he ordered.

She did so automatically and he unhooked the clasp, sliding the clasp so that they fell into his palm. Taking her left hand, he slid them onto it, his fingers going over the stone. “That’s better.” He pocketed the necklace and continued eating.
